Claim jumpers

HILLGROVE, Saturday.
The Baker’s Creek Company has cleaned up for the past fortnight. From 295 tons of quartz 1091oz. of gold were obtained, the returns coming back to the old form The jumpers went down again this morning, tore up the rails and generally obstructed the work. The manager, in order to keep the work moving, repaired the truck line and instructed his men to resent any further interference. Shortly afterwards the jumpers were removed from the mine by the Baker’s Creek men, and have not attempted to return. It now appears that the ground they claim is worked out. Even if they get possession it is worthless.
The Sunlight Company, through their legal manager, are making strenuous efforts to get the Cooney Creek-road repaired out of the amount voted for that purpose, as their boiler is lying at Armidale and cannot be carried to the works owing to the impassable state of the road. They will have to discharge their men and wait for fine weather if the road is not repaired. The Lady Carrington boiler and the engine for the battery were lowered down the falls this week. The reef is being driven southerly, and is looking better than ever, showing gold freely all over the face. Baker’s Creek North clean up on Monday. The Primrose Company starts crushing next week.
