The North Western Advocate and the Emu Bay Times (Tas.), Saturday 7 January 1905

A telegram from Hillgrove, a mining township, states that the bush fire at Metz is burning furiously and threatening the town. The cemetery was swept last night, and three houses were burned this morning, viz., Chaffey’s, Bindley’s and Roberts’. A telephone message was received at Hillgrove asking for volunteers to assist to save the town. The residence of Mr T. Ince was destroyed. Metz road and Armidale road, between Hillgrove and Cooney Creek, a distance of six miles, are one stretch of flames. The fire from Long Point has worked towards Hillgrove and destroyed everything before it.
